Residents of Egoli Informal Settlement in Schaapkraal, yesterday morning, took things into their own hands when an unknown man entered the camp to film young girls.
The man, who was taken to Philippi Police Station, after being beaten by the community was caught red-handed by residents who were on their way to work.
According to eye-witnesses, the suspect was walking behind a group of young girls who are believed to have been on their way to school, when he started taking pictures.
“We saw him taking pictures and approached him. When we asked him what he was doing, he started to get hysterical, and tried to break his phone,” explained Igshaan Adams from Egoli.
“He knew what he was doing was wrong, and before we could even question him about it, he tried to lie by telling us that he is not taking pictures of the girls.
“He then went ahead and tried to break his phone, but residents in the community grabbed the phone from him.”
Adams says after checking the suspect’s phone, several pictures of young girls were discovered, mostly pictures where school girls legs are exposed.
The man, believed to be in his 30’s was beaten by the community for a short while, before being taken to the police station.
Captain Lance Goliath confirmed that the Wynberg Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS), is currently investigating the matter. The suspect is still in police custody and his cellphone was taken in as evidence.
Egoli’s leader Abraham Fransman said he is shocked at what has occurred and will not allow any man to endanger the lives of women and children in the community. An update on the matter will be posted soon. Aishah Cassiem (Deen Times)
