Supporters of suspended eThekwini mayor took to the streets on Thursday morning demanding the reinstatement of Zandile Gumede. The Durban mayor who faces charges of corruption was arrested last month and is out on R50,000 bail.
While a fight broke out between the mayor’s supporters and the police in front of Durban City Hall in Garden Street, several journalists were also arrested for filming the manhandling of some protestors.
It is reported that seven people have been arrested this morning, including supporters and will face charges of public violence. According to the police, the group gathered illegally and when asked to leave, they refused. Stun grenades were used to disperse the crowd.
