eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede is set to appear in the commercial crimes court in Durban, today, on charges of corruption. The charges include fraud that involves a R208 million tender within the Durban Solid Waste (DSW) department in 2016 where service providers were believed to have been paid huge amounts of money for services that were not rolled out.
According to reports, 58-year-old Gumede who celebrated her birthday yesterday handed herself over to the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal before being arrested. Her arrest follows that of nine other individuals, two weeks ago, including the department’s deputy head and the city’s supply chain manager, for fraud relating to the same tender. The other accused were service providers, reports confirm.
City Press reported that Gumede will be appearing alongside senior municipal councillor Mondli Mthembu, today, on charges that include money-laundering, corruption, and racketeering. An update on this story will be posted soon.
