The Ellen Pakkies Story, a movie based on the life of a Cape Flats mother and her drug addict son, won four big awards at this year’s South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) held at Sun City this past weekend.
The movie, released last year was produced and directed by Daryne Joshua and tells the story of Ellen Pakkies from Lavender Hill. The mother made headlines in 2007 after she strangled her 20-year-old son to death.
Pakkies who handed herself into the police was released after a local lawyer managed to convince the court that she had no choice but to kill her son.
South African actress Jill Levenberg who plays the role of Pakkies, won Best Actress at the awards evening.
Jarrid Geduld who played the role of the drug-addict son was titled Best Actor for his efforts.
The director of the movie also won Best Achievement in Directing and Quinn Lubbe for Best Achievement in Original Music/ Score. (Deen Times)
