Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba announced his resignation from both the city and the DA at a press conference at the Johannesburg city council on Monday morning. His resignation comes a day after the election of former DA leader Helen Zille as federal council chairperson this past weekend.
Mashaba said he had only accepted the invite to join the party and serve the city because of his belief in Musi Maimane’s vision. He will officially step down as mayor at the end of November by which he expects the party to have identified a replacement for him.
He added that he deeply regrets that the DA he signed up to, and that the election of Zille stands in opposition with the people he represents and the majority of the South Africans. (Picture: SABC)
