Lansdowne police arrested a man and woman, between the ages of 24 and 30 in the Epping area this week.
The two were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and money amounting to over R600 000.
The arrest was made on Tuesday 26 February at 12:00 when members of the Khayelitsha TRT (Tactical Response Team) received a tip-off of suspicious activity in the area.
Sergeant Nkululeko Mnyaka, spokesperson for Lansdowne police said the two suspects were spotted in Epping Market and were suspected of having drugs in the vehicle that they were occupying.
“The duo drove from the Epping area into the direction of Lansdowne. The police followed them until Lawson Road, before pulling them over for a stop and search.
“Police found a black 9mm firearm with the serial number scratched off, plus 12 live rounds.”
Upon searching further, police discovered over R600 000 worth of money inside a box located in the vehicle’s boot.
The two were arrested immediately and taken to Lansdowne Police Station, and are currently facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and money laundering. They are due to appear in Wynberg Court once the investigation has been completed.
