Angry truck owners took to the streets to protest leaving Durban on a standstill this morning. Motorists using roads leading to the Durban Container Terminal (DCT) had to take alternative routes as hundreds of trucks blocked off the street due to service demands that were not met. The road closure caused traffic congestion on uMbilo Road and South Coast Road, reports confirm.
IOL news reported that the protestors who included truck drivers claim that officials from Transnet have given them empty promises over the past few years and are now demanding an urgent meeting with the company (Transnet). Among the issues raised by the protesters was that of better salaries, staffing issues, equipment not being maintained properly, and no hydraulic oil, IOL said.
Truck owners also claim that the turnaround time to offload a container at the Durban container terminal is between 16 to 48 hours. The turnaround time was previously 90 minutes. Protesters slept overnight at the DCT entrance demanding to meet Transnet officials and are currently affecting shipping as no vessels are being loaded or offloaded, IOL added. A followup on this story will be posted soon.
